Introduction: Prototyping

The easiest way to understand the term would be to create a mock-up or a first hand, first shot at an idea in a tangible format which can be a product or a process or even an enquiry and going through with it without emphasizing on the look and feel but the meaning behind it, and there you have it: a prototype.

It is important to understand the role a prototype may play in influencing and guiding the direction of the design. A prototype may be used in one of the following ways:

It is important to note that it is imperative to do prototyping from a one point perspective to develop a more personal connection and deeper understanding of what is it that one is doing.

Activity: Know thy neighbor

In this session, we were divided into groups of 3 and asked to understand each other’s backgrounds in the form of an interesting project that we’ve been a part of and provide a brief of the same so, a member of the group could do their own rendition of it. I was Ziming’s “client” with the brief being to design a tattoo for her friend. To kick things off, I asked to define some defining characteristics of her friend to understand the kind of person I was to design a tattoo for and be able to “design” something that suits the person’s personality. So, the keywords for me were:

I started off with drawing a barbed wire like boundary which is fluid in nature but political in nature with one end left free to represent the idea of breaking free. I proceeded with adding some details to proceed with the second stage and then added three epicenters in the form of circles that coexist in unison and channel the colors signifying water (purity) and blood (sacrifice) that flow through, breaking the shackles representing the idea of the struggle paying off owing to the protesting nature of the mutual client.

IPP Design Intervention

In this session, we understood the importance and meaning behind stepping into the feet of the community and the people, we, as designer tend to design for. The core of the lesson is to understand why/when design becomes personal and how that impacts one’s thinking and the consideration when it comes to designing the next big change. Below are some examples, based off which we decided to create an intervention. I tried a combination of extreme reflection and learn something new to develop something new, of sorts. You may want to check the same under the intervention tab on the side.
